On June 30, 2023 Florida Governor DeSantis signed into law Senate Bill 1416 making significant changes to Florida family law including abolishing permanent alimony. Effective July 1, 2023, "permanent" alimony is abolished for all pending and future divorce cases. Instead, a formula for calculating alimony based on the parties' length of marriage and respective net incomes, among other factors, is established. The changes should provide greater predictability and consistency in determination of alimony awards.
